Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Tanzania to see CARE’s work firsthand. I met so many strong women who wake up every day dreaming of a better future for themselves, their children, and their communities. I listened as so many women spoke about the hardships of everyday life including the burden of fetching water, which falls primarily on the females.
In today’s culture of instant gratification, I was having a hard time envisioning a routine in which my sisters or I would have to walk up to four miles (10,000 steps) for basic needs like food, firewood, and clean water for my family. But what struck me most was that this daily trek is dangerous and can prevent girls from attending school, developing a career, and acquiring financial independence (please take 30 seconds to watch the video at the bottom of this page).
I am joining CARE’s Walk In Her Shoes fundraising campaign and taking 10,000 steps each day for one week – from March 8 to 14, 2017 – in solidarity with the journey taken each day by women and girls around the world.
Please join me in supporting CARE’s work around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. I have pledged to raise at least $1,000, but I would love to raise much more. All donations are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers. And more than 90% of expenses support poverty-fighting projects around the world. Please contribute whatever you can and share this page with others so they too can have an opportunity to make a difference.
Thank you for sharing in my vision of a world where poverty doesn’t exist and all people live in dignity and security.
